Ritchey Outback Carbon Break-Away gravel travel frameset review

How do you like the sound of a do-it-all gravel bike, one that leans a little towards the performance end of the spectrum, but still collapses to fit inside an inconspicuous case that won’t raise eyebrows at the airline check-in counter? That’s exactly what the Ritchey Outback Carbon Break-Away frameset promises, and tech writer Dave Rome has spent the past few months riding gravel and tarmac on one – with a little traveling in between – to see if those promises hold true. Whether you’re seeking a new gravel ride, interested in a versatile travel bike, or just intrigued by such a niche offering, this just might suit your needs. Before you get reading, though, it’s worth noting that Ritchey have two new Outback models available: the teal-coloured steel version, and the carbon Break-Away reviewed here. While both are designed for going beyond where the tarmac ends, a quick look at the geometry charts proves the material isn’t the only difference. If you’re keen on the steel Outback, take this review with a grain of salt. Despite the niche market, Ritchey have long-offered a range of production travel framesets with the patented Break-Away design. Unlike the threaded S&S couple...

In the Modern Design World, Solid Modeling is Not Enough > ENGINEERING.com

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> With everything in the world being designed in 3D and almost all of it represented precisely with 10 degrees of precision, with everything smooth and straight, we may have missed a very important detail: the real world is anything but smooth and straight. Objects in the natural world are at best curvy, but sometimes craggy, jagged or random—no two snowflakes are alike, mountains are not cones and the Earth is not exactly asphere. Even man-made objects that are originally represented as perfect geometry exist with shapes that are not quite perfect—their imperfections a result of manufacturing fallibility. Think of the highly precise laser scanners that return a point cloud consisting of millions, if not billions, of points with X, Y and Z coordinates. The points form polygons, usually triangles, which are connected to make a faceted (not smooth) surface. Despite the great detail possible, the polygon mesh can be inaccurate or unrepresentative of the object or scene being scanned for a number of reasons. For example, scanning a doorknob. T...

Magnetic lifters — what are they and what are they for besides being, uhm, containers for

Magnetic lifters — what are they and what are they for besides being, uhm, containers for contraband? I have never seen one except in pictures recently. It shocked me that drug smugglers could really find all means to enhance their illegal activities. Nothing is spared. Magnetic lifters have been in the news lately, not because of their use in heavy industries, but because a number of these imported metal objects are now being used to smuggle in illegal drugs, such as crystal meth or “shabu” amounting to billions of pesos. No sooner have most of us heard about these heavy, thick metal magnetic lifters for the first time in connection with drugs than a conflagration erupted, with no less than an official of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) raising a howl about how more drugs were in fact smuggled in via magnetic lifters but were not, uhm, detected. BOC’s former X-ray inspection chief Ma. Lourdes Mangaoang boldly came forward to accuse Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña of ignoring her alert that a drug shipment was once again going through customs. (A previous one had been foiled, establishing the fact that imported magnetic lifters are being used for shabu shipments and, therefore, c...
