Watch an Oblivious Truck Driver Dump Cement on Cars as It Drives Down the Road

Imagine driving through town in your new whip and suddenly a concrete truck takes a dump on you. A driver from San Antonio, Texas experienced exactly that and caught it all on video after getting stuck behind a semi-truck dumping wet cement all over the roadway, splashing other vehicles along the way, according to KSAT. The unidentified woman sent the video to the local San Antonio news affiliate, which aired the video on Tuesday, showing the concrete mixer pouring its contents as it attempts to make a left turn at a junction. The victim said that cement sprayed all over the front bumper and driver’s side of her new car as she pursued the truck to capture it red-handed. “I pulled into the turning lane behind him and began filming him so I had some sort of evidence as I could not fully process that this was actually happening,” the woman told reporters. The incident unfolded at the intersection of Culebra Road and Rogers Road on Wednesday, at approximately 5:50 p.m. The truck, which belongs to River City Ready Mix out of La Crosse, Wisconsin, reportedly continued pouring cement on the road as it kept going. Other motorists apparently attempted to signal the driver to stop, but w...

Payne: It’s the most powerful VW GLI ever — and it has a stick

This conversation is moderated according to USA TODAY’s community rules. Please read the rules before joining the discussion. You could hear the teeth gnashing this summer when Chevy introduced the eighth-generation Corvette without a manual transmission option. For those willing to pay less than half the price of a new Corvette, the next-generation Volkswagen Jetta GLI is not only the most powerful GLI ever — it also comes with a stick. Not that I don’t understand the concerns of the Corvette faithful. Super sports-cars with manuals are surely on their last legs. There is something deeply satisfying about being able to slowly unleash 500 horsepower at a stoplight, the rear wheels smoking as you work throttle and clutch together like bow and strings. WAAAWWHHRRGH! Or the satisfaction of a buttery, 4-to-2 downshift into a 90-degree turn after a perfect heel-and-toe downshift. AWROOOMYEAHHH! But high-end dual-clutch automatic boxes do it all so much better that it’s pointless to resist. The faithful want 2.9-second zero-60 runs? Gotta have a dual-clutch automatic tranny. Want a car that stops on a dime with lightning quick downshifts? Same answer. Want a $70,000 ‘Vett...

It’s possible to pick up a low-cost set of speakers for a few dollars, but by

It’s possible to pick up a low-cost set of speakers for a few dollars, but by and large, you don’t get a lot of quality for your money. Expect a small pair of drivers, with tinny sound and ugly noises from the enclosure’s cheap materials. [JSK-koubou] has shown us, however, that these speakers can become so much more. In this case at least, the basic speaker drivers and electronics inside were passable. Harvesting these, the builder then proceeds to create a stunning pair of tuned wooden enclosures for the speakers. This is achieved with a routing template, large blocks of wood and plenty of elbow grease. The internal structure makes a huge difference to the bass response of the speakers, allowing them to far more faithfully recreate the music under test. Thanks to the artisan-level craftsmanship, the final product is stunning to look at, too. It’s impressive just how well a cheap pair of drivers can perform with a proper enclosure, and of course, there’s nothing to stop an even better set of drivers being installed, either. The internal structure makes a huge difference to the bass response of the speakers, allowing them to far more faithfully recreate the music under test. No...

Teen Mental Health First Aid: Inside the Lady Gaga-backed program to help students

Most high school students learn some sort of first aid in health class, whether it’s the Heimlich maneuver, how to treat a wound or CPR. But now, more health experts, teachers and young people are pushing for a different type of first aid lesson in high schools: mental health first aid — a toolkit for teens to learn how to help a friend in crisis. An initiative called teen Mental Health First Aid, backed by superstar and mental health advocate Lady Gaga, just finished its pilot program in eight high schools across the country and is slated to expand this fall. “I know what it means to have someone support me and understand what I’m going through, and every young person in the world should have someone to turn to when they’re hurting,” Lady Gaga said in a Facebook video. “It saved my life, and it will save theirs.” The teen Mental Health First Aid pilot program for young adults teaches young adults and people who work with them how respond to the signs of mental illness and substance use. It’s run by the National Council for Behavioral Health and supported by the Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit co-founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanot...

Buxton haulier Lomas Distribution praised for safety-conscious tanker design at awards

The firm – which was established in 1984 and employs 380 staff – also received the Innovation Award for Safety at the Tip Ex and Tank Ex gala in Harrogate in recognition of a unique tanker design which ensures driver safety. Lomas operate over 250 bulk powder tankers delivering bulk powders such as cement, lime and ash throughout the UK and Europe alongside its fleet of bulk tippers and curtain sided vehicles. They were praised at the awards for an on-board live video and monitoring system which ‘dramatically’ reduces the risks associated with lone working for drivers. The system identifies any emerging issues – activating emergency stops and vehicle beacons to summon help. If a safety or mechanical issue arises it automatically sends an email to the transport office – enabling 360 degree vehicle cameras to remotely activate should more actions be required. Lomas’ innovatively-designed twin steer axle also allows urban deliveries on full-size trailers which enables them to carry much larger loads and reduce delivery frequency and carbon their footprint as a result. Operations manager Simon Duffy said the vehicle was initially intended fo...

The challenge facing Sony with PlayStation VR is immense. The firm doesn’t just have to make

The challenge facing Sony with PlayStation VR is immense. The firm doesn’t just have to make virtual reality work on a system with nowhere near the same level of horsepower as the PC minimum specification, it has to bring in very expensive hardware at an affordable price-point and it has to integrate VR into the living room – the natural home for the core console. The end result is a masterpiece of hardware design with nips and tucks in (mostly) the right places, backed by a wide range of software that effortlessly propels Sony onto level-footing with established players in the VR field. PlayStation VR isn’t perfect, but it works. Principally, it captures the essence of ‘presence’. Don the headset and the sensation is very much like you have been transported to another place, whether it’s the GCPD rooftop view over Gotham City in Arkham VR, the interior of an Aston Martin Vanquish in DriveClub or the more stylised Tron-like world of Battlezone VR. Of course, base visual quality isn’t on par with your existing PlayStation 4 library: compromises are required, but they don’t intrude too much on that awesome feeling of ‘being the...
